The Laurie Thomas Winter School is a highlight in the Christchurch Photographic Society’s calendar. Laurie Thomas, a former member of CPS, bequeathed a considerable amount of money to the club. This money has been used to run annual residential Winter Schools for members for the past thirteen years. This year the school was held on the weekend of 23/25 July at Tekapo. We stayed at the Scenic Resort on the shores of Lake Tekapo. The accommodation was excellent, the proprietors very accommodating and the food very good.
The invited lecturers were Jackie Ranken and Mike Langford. Jackie is a multi award winning landscape and art photographer. And Mike is a landscape, travel and geographic photographer; he has also won many international awards. Together they run the Queenstown Creative Photography and 4WD Photo Safari.
On the Friday evening we were introduced to the photographic styles of both Jackie and Mike. Their individual styles are very different to each other. They make a wonderful combination both artistically and personally. Their outlook, commentary and enthusiasm gave us tremendous inspiration. After the Saturday morning shoot we had instruction on photographic composition and after lunch they gave us valuable critiquing. Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning saw us break off into various groups to go exploring photographic possibilities. We ventured along the north shores of Lake Tekapo, Lake Alexandrina, and Lake Pukaki and up Mt John. The weather was challenging at times which made us think seriously about discovering different capabilities of our cameras. Jackie and Mike we both very thorough with their instructions and encouraged us with much hands on learning. It was good to go outside the usual comfort range and to gain more technical skills. I always wondered what half of those buttons on my camera were for!!
It was a tremendously rewarding weekend, with much camaraderie and learning. It was great to make new friends and be reacquainted with old ones. Thank you very much to the organizing team of Carolyn, Frank, Sharlene and Phil. A very special vote of thanks to our wonderful tutors Mike and Jackie.

Flock Hill Lodge 24 - 26th July 2009
Mountains, snow fed rivers and lakes dominated the natural landscape of the rugged foothills of the Southern Alps. This provided the unique backdrop for photographers to extend their abilities beyond the boundaries of correctness and enter a “winter theme” for the 2009 CPS Laurie Thomas Winter School.
Our tutor Sally Mason introduced the art of photography through words, music and audio visuals. Sally lived at the nearby Mount White Station until the age of seven, so was familiar with the crisp alpine temperatures and the perfect conditions available to us.
Sally gave inspiration from her own personal journey to sharpen our perceptions of creative photography and opened the doors for individual development to seek and find the hidden artistic talents within … “We see what we feel” and “we should never under estimate our goals” said Sally and ideally these feelings can be captured in camera.
For those who dared cross over the demarcation line and into the wonderful world of the “Narnia” landscapes inspired by the “digital age” of photography and creative aspects available in camera with movement, shutter speed and colour… were by no means disappointed.
The organisers worked hard to ensure that members could enjoy the camaraderie of photography that Laurie Thomas obviously intended and are to be commended for their contribution to the Club.
This weekend gave simplicity to photography and the opportunity to explore the field of thought that embraced such things as metaphysical phenomena and the beauty of all living things. Nature surely planned it that way.
Thank you to all involved for this thought provoking experience.
