The Photographic Society of New Zealand

Two special reasons to join PSNZ during April to June

  1. Camera club members who join PSNZ during April to June will receive a copy of NZ Camera 2009 mailed directly to them absolutely FREE! (One book free to each Individual, Double or Family membership)
  2. If you enjoy the fun and challenges of photography and wish to develop your photographic skills, then PSNZ has much to offer.

NZ Camera

Is a showcase of outstanding photographs produced by members.

Each year, members are invited to submit images for possible inclusion in New Zealand Camera. All members of PSNZ receive a complimentary copy of NZ Camera – a great bonus for belonging to The Photographic Society of New Zealand.

Cameratalk

A lively publication produced every 2 months and posted out to members. Cameratalk keeps members in touch with all PSNZ activities and features members’ award winning photographs from various competitions and salons.

Photographic Honours

PSNZ Honours recognises different levels of photographic achievement and gives members worthwhile goals. Recipients may append the honours to their names so long as they remain members of the Society.

Licentiate (LPSNZ) an entry level distinction. It recognises proficiency of a high order in practical photography. Associate (APSNZ) recognises proficiency of a higher order than that required for an ‘L’.

Only those who already have an APSNZ may apply for a Fellowship (FPSNZ). Fellowships are awarded in recognition of outstanding ability and superior photographic skills.

Convention & Regionals

The most important purpose of the PSNZ annual National Convention is to enable photographers to meet and share their knowledge and enthusiasm for their hobby. There is always a great line-up of Photography presenters, workshops and activities to enthuse and inspire every photographer.

Regional Conventions are weekend events and are Conventions in miniature. Two are held in the North Island and one in the South each year, usually between September and November. Again, the programmes are interesting and offer many opportunities for fellowship and learning.

Competitions

Regular competitions are held to encourage and promote members’ photographic skills.

CanonOnline - an on-line digital image competition held every 2 months.

Jack Sprosen Memorial Trophy for Digital Audio Visual sequences.

National Exhibition (NATEX) is PSNZ’s annual showcase of members’ best photographs taken over the past year. This exhibition is held in conjunction with the annual National Convention.

Presidents Report - 4 November 2009

Good evening everyone. On behalf of the Committee we welcome you all to this Annual General Meeting of the Christchurch Photographic Society.

I am very pleased to present this report to you.

Every year some members leave and new members join. 61 new members have joined CPS since the last AGM.

The Tutorial programme run by Bruce Jensen is appreciated by all who attend and he has done a wonderful job with 12 to 39 members being involved every 2 weeks throughout the year.

An excellent new members and C grade programme has been run by Carolyn and Frank Green and their team for the past 6 months and it has been extremely successful in informing and involving new members in how the club works in all areas.

Our weekly meetings are well attended with between 54 and 87 attending regularly. We have had a wide variety of competition judges and an equally wide variety of speakers this year and one can learn or be inspired by them all.

The Committee resolved to run a very tight financial year and has concentrated on the digital areas with redeveloping the Website to provide full information for all aspects of our society and to allow digital upload of projected images for competitions. We do thank Steve Johnstone, Dave Slaten and all the IT team for a very successful operation. Another Web database has been set up for the Laurie Thomas Salon. The Viewfinder has been expanded from a simple 6 weekly printed document to a digital and printed monthly newsy version.

The interclub competitions have also been successful with a 1st place in the Treena Packer Natural History Salon and 5th place in the Fred Bowron PI Landscape Competition. Many members have also been very successful in individual interclub and international Salons. Several members have been regraded through the year and we congratulate them all.

Another successful and fun Laurie Thomas Winter School at Flock Hill was held while the Digital weekend is yet to come. The Southern Regional Conference in Greymouth was attended by many members and a special service award was presented to Iain Anderson for his work behind the scenes at CPS.

Congratulations Iain.

Monthly field trips have been organised and well attended this year for which we give special thanks to Chris “Ulysses” Newman and his good lady Judy Reij.

We have had, what I would call, a good steady year, consulting with members after running a large survey and collating the results. Members want more education, more images in competitions and Salons, receive better critique, have more social interaction with CPS members and most of all have fun!! It is 5 years since the beginning of the consultation process and we will trial several changes next year and then get your feedback to plan for the following year. Thank you to the survey team.

Print numbers have dropped in all clubs in the South Island. The 5 Open Print competitions with 2 entries each, next year will provide encouragement and training in printing and presentation skills.

We have purchased a notice board which is closely monitored and updated; bought print boxes to send competition entries to judges; redesigned membership name badges, updated the trophy book with photos and typed lists and redesigned the competition certificates so they are a better size for storing and mailing to those who cannot collect them in person.

I do thank Ian, my husband for his unswerving support in my role of President.

And I especially thank the committee for their team work, their support of me, and their commitment to the Society this year. Sadly Lorraine Wagg, Dave Slaten and John Suckling will be stepping down tonight from the committee. My special thanks to you all and we will miss you and your imput on committee.

Thank you

Diana Andrews
President CPS

Neil Pardington at Christchurch Art Gallery

From DPhoto: Although Christchurch Art Gallery is currently undergoing refurbishment, its doors are set to open later this year, with hundreds of works going on show to the public for the first time in six-and-a-half years.

Meanwhile, a bevvy of exhibitions are going up, including the touring program by photographic artist, Neil Pardington. The Vault is a major project for Pardington, who worked behind-the-scenes in museums and galleries across the country with his large format camera. The results include the forty large-scale framed photographs on display at Christchurch, which reveal the hidden collection storage spaces normally closed to the public.

Neil Pardington: The Vault runs Nov 6 to Mar 14 2010 at the Christchurch Art Gallery.

The 2010 Jack Sprosen Memorial Award

The Photographic Society of New Zealand recently held the 2009 competition for digital audio visual sequences of which the top five were shown at the Wanganui Nation Convention in April 2009.

The entry form for the 2010 competition is now available here and the judging will be in conjunction with the 2010 National Convention being held in Nelson in April 2010.

Entries for the 2010 competition close on 24th February so there is time over the holiday period to create an interesting AV.
