“Freezie-Frosties” Field Trip Report

The Freezie-Frosties Field Trip, beginning in the Lake Heron Basin and ending in the Upper Rangitata Valley near Erewhon Station, marked the end of the reign of Ulysses (aka Chris Newman) as Field Trip Officer. Except for a two-year break, he has run our field trips since the late 1990s.

Thirty-five people attended, in spite of a pre-dawn start at Hakatere. It was a perfect day: the sun shone, the frost sparkled, the snow-covered mountains gleamed, the water glistened.

At lunchtime we celebrated Ulysses’s imminent birthday with a chocolate-fish cake. A breeze competed with Ulysses in blowing out the candle, and an item from a well-equipped 4WD tool-box solved the problem of cutting through the thick chocolate coating.

Our thanks to Ulysses for his dedication over the years to running such enjoyable field trips, for the lunchtime quizzes, and for the chocolate fish prizes.

CPS Confidential Members Survey

Your feedback and ideas will help us plan future activities to meet members’ expectations.

It will be impossible to please every member equally, and the “popular” choice may not always be the most practical or fair, but will carefully consider your opinions and wishes in planning future activities.

If you haven’t received a copy of the survey, please click here to download it, complete with a pen (or pencil) and return by the 25th August.

2010 Trenna Packer Salver Competition

It was a very successful night, and Dr Terry Maguire Hon PSNZ, EFIAP from Dunedin was the Judge, and he presented his comments on the night.

2010 winners

1st Christchurch Photographic Society
2nd Southland Photographic Society
3rd Howick Camera Club

Individual Honours Certificates went to:

Shona Keeble, Howick Camera Club, for Mycena Mariae.
Thorston Mueller, New Brighton Photographic Club, for Mating Blowflys
Neil Jackson, Nelson Camera Club, for Thelymitra cyanea.

Following are the general comments Terry made at the beginning of the evening, which cover the main points.

It was a pleasure to judge the 2010 Trenna Packer Salver Competition and to be given the opportunity to see so many excellent New Zealand natural history images from 19 different clubs. The general standard of the images was very high, with attention to focus, exposure and composition being generally very well handled. The top sets stood out because of the slightly better presentation and photographic competence, but several sets came close to a placing in the top three.

There were some disappointments for me as a judge. Firstly, the objective of this competition is “to illustrate the diversity of the natural world in New Zealand.....”.

Many entries did not interpret this statement in the way I think it was intended, and they entered sets of the same subjects, e.g. all birds, all fungi etc. While these sets may have shown the diversity within that particular group, I think it was intended that each set should show some variety of subject matter. This year I have been somewhat relaxed regarding this interpretation and have placed some sets which did not demonstrate such variety, mostly because of the high quality of the images, but in future a judge might not be so lenient. I therefore urge you to look carefully at making sure your sets do show the required diversity. Secondly, I can now appreciate why some clubs run natural history competitions entitled “ABB” (Anything But Birds). In this Trenna Packer competition, of the 114 images submitted, 64 were of birds. Surely there are many other interesting and exciting nature subjects out there. Lastly, these entries are judged as sets. Thus presentation is equal in importance to subject matter.

Too many sets paid no attention to how the sets held together as a group. Remember, it is the set that is being judged, not the individual images. It is therefore unwise to have six images of different sizes, orientations, colour mixed with monochrome, or images some of which have borders and some which do not. These points having been made, I must say that it has been a pleasure to see your work, so much of which is of international standard. Congratulations to the three top placed clubs and to the owners of the images selected for special mention.

Photojournalism “PJ” Competition

An annual competition run by the New Brighton Photographic Club Inc.

In the traditional sense Photojournalism is the use of photographs for publication as a supplement to journalistic accounts of news stories, so that together, the narrative and the photograph tell the whole story. To succeed for this purpose, a photograph will have attributes of – Timeliness - the photograph has meaning in the context of an event or topic.

Objectivity - the photograph will be an accurate representation of the event/topic it depicts In general terms, a photojournalism photograph consists of a story-telling photograph, such as may be seen in newspapers, magazines, on television and on the internet and may include documentary, contemporary life, illustration, news or human interest subject matter.

For this competition, emphasis should be given to ‘life in our world’ and the broad theme “Man and Man’s Environment” should be used as guidance.

Remember, it’s a “PJ competition” which means the judging panel will look for the qualities outlined above.

Presidents Report - 4 November 2009

Good evening everyone. On behalf of the Committee we welcome you all to this Annual General Meeting of the Christchurch Photographic Society.

I am very pleased to present this report to you.

Every year some members leave and new members join. 61 new members have joined CPS since the last AGM.

The Tutorial programme run by Bruce Jensen is appreciated by all who attend and he has done a wonderful job with 12 to 39 members being involved every 2 weeks throughout the year.

An excellent new members and C grade programme has been run by Carolyn and Frank Green and their team for the past 6 months and it has been extremely successful in informing and involving new members in how the club works in all areas.

Our weekly meetings are well attended with between 54 and 87 attending regularly. We have had a wide variety of competition judges and an equally wide variety of speakers this year and one can learn or be inspired by them all.

The Committee resolved to run a very tight financial year and has concentrated on the digital areas with redeveloping the Website to provide full information for all aspects of our society and to allow digital upload of projected images for competitions. We do thank Steve Johnstone, Dave Slaten and all the IT team for a very successful operation. Another Web database has been set up for the Laurie Thomas Salon. The Viewfinder has been expanded from a simple 6 weekly printed document to a digital and printed monthly newsy version.

The interclub competitions have also been successful with a 1st place in the Treena Packer Natural History Salon and 5th place in the Fred Bowron PI Landscape Competition. Many members have also been very successful in individual interclub and international Salons. Several members have been regraded through the year and we congratulate them all.

Another successful and fun Laurie Thomas Winter School at Flock Hill was held while the Digital weekend is yet to come. The Southern Regional Conference in Greymouth was attended by many members and a special service award was presented to Iain Anderson for his work behind the scenes at CPS.

Congratulations Iain.

Monthly field trips have been organised and well attended this year for which we give special thanks to Chris “Ulysses” Newman and his good lady Judy Reij.

We have had, what I would call, a good steady year, consulting with members after running a large survey and collating the results. Members want more education, more images in competitions and Salons, receive better critique, have more social interaction with CPS members and most of all have fun!! It is 5 years since the beginning of the consultation process and we will trial several changes next year and then get your feedback to plan for the following year. Thank you to the survey team.

Print numbers have dropped in all clubs in the South Island. The 5 Open Print competitions with 2 entries each, next year will provide encouragement and training in printing and presentation skills.

We have purchased a notice board which is closely monitored and updated; bought print boxes to send competition entries to judges; redesigned membership name badges, updated the trophy book with photos and typed lists and redesigned the competition certificates so they are a better size for storing and mailing to those who cannot collect them in person.

I do thank Ian, my husband for his unswerving support in my role of President.

And I especially thank the committee for their team work, their support of me, and their commitment to the Society this year. Sadly Lorraine Wagg, Dave Slaten and John Suckling will be stepping down tonight from the committee. My special thanks to you all and we will miss you and your imput on committee.

Thank you

Diana Andrews
